Promoting British Values

The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy - values of:

These values are covered in the Mount Charles School curriculum. Examples (by no means an exhaustive list) where this is included are listed below.

Democracy

Pupils are given a broad general knowledge of, and the promotion of respect for, public institutions and services (for example, organised visits from the emergency services and charities). Annual elections take place to appoint pupils onto the school council. The work of the school council itself helps pupils to express their views. Debates take place in literacy sessions to model how to effectively argue and defend a point of view.

Rule of Law

Clear school rules are established to ensure pupils understand the expectations are clear and fair and to distinguish right from wrong. Pupils are taught how living under rule of law protects individuals.

Individual Liberty

Pupils are encouraged to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence. Through initiatives such as the Diamond Rules Challenge, pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their own behaviour. Across the school there is an anti-bullying culture and stereotypes are challenged.

Respect and Tolerance

The curriculum is designed in such a way to help pupils acquire an understanding of, and respect for, their own and other cultures and ways of life. Visits take place to places of worship and links are made with faith communities (for example our well established link with Canon Barnett School - a multi-faith school in Tower Hamlets, London).
