On Thursday 8th December our Year 3 and 4 teams played friendly matches away against Biscovey. These were our first fixtures and all of our players were really enthusiastic and a credit to the school. They played four matches, winning two and losing two, so honours were even on the day. We now look forward to playing at Newquay Junior on Monday 9th January. Many thanks to Mrs.Gray and Mr.Smith, who helped with supervision and coaching on the day.

Teams: Max, Sophie, Stanley, Ethan, Corey, Tobi, Jake, Abi, Ellie, David, Phinneas, Phoebe, Isabelle, Toby, Ryan, Sam, Ethan, Sam, Maisie

Swimming

Swimming

On Thursday 17th November our Year 5 and 6 teams travelled to Truro to swim against Truro Prep and Devoran Schools in a friendly gala. The level of competition was really good as we often meet these schools at the Cornwall Games Gala finals. Our swimmers performed really well on the day and were a credit to the school. After 36 races, we achieved 7 x 1sts, 15 x 2nd’s and 14 x 3rd’. When all of the points were added up we finished second overall. This gala gives us a really good idea where we are in terms of our progress towards the St.Austell Gala and the Cornwall Games and our swimmers are certainly on track. Many thanks to Mrs.Gray, Helen Welland, Colin Williams and Matt Nile for their help on poolside.

Team: George, Adrian, Stanley, Jake, Lizzy, Jess, Eva, Leonne, Kieran, George, Owain, Finlay, Mea, Holly, Kelsey, Tilly.

The following Thursday (24th November) the Year 3 and 4 teams also went to Truro to swim against Truro Prep. We were really up against it on the day as Truro Prep had some very impressive Truro City swimmers, we finished second at the end of the twenty eight races but our children stuck at it and gained some valuable experience. For many of our team it was their first ever gala and they deserve great credit for their efforts. Many thanks to Mrs.Meens, Mrs.Gray and Helen Welland for their help on poolside and to those parents who travelled to Truro to support the team.

Team: Ellie, Lily, Olivia, Chelsea, Max, Ethan, Henry, Jai, Luke, Abi, Grace, Daisy, Isabelle, Kira, Jayden, Ethan, Tobi, Toby.

Netball (v St Mewan)

Netball Away against St Mewan 29th November

A team – George, Jude, Rodrigo, Lilyah (C), Lizzy, Gracie and Jasmine

Our A team played first and St. Mewan got off to a strong start with a superb shooter who gained them three goals! We went into the third quarter a few more goals down. The third quarter was our best quarter and although we couldn’t quite get the ball in the net, the A team were defending well and stopped St. Mewan from scoring any goals. Unfortunately, St Mewan managed to score a few more goals in the final quarter, meaning that they won the game. Player of the match goes to Lilyah. B team – Jess (C), Millie, Tilly, William, Denis, Dexter, Tineasha and Libby

The B team played next and again St. Mewan started well by scoring 3 goals. The B team were much stronger in the second and third quarters, where Libby and Denis managed to score a goal each. They were playing extremely well as a team and it meant that we went into the final quarter 3 -2 down. In the final quarter we had a few attempts at shooting but unluckily we didn’t manage to score any. However, St. Mewan managed to score a few more. The game ended as 7 – 2 to St. Mewan. Everyone kept their spirits up and there was a smile on their faces throughout the match. Player of the match goes to Denis.

Hockey Tournament: Poltair

Team: Freddie (C), Finlay, Kieran, Owain, Bobby, Millie, Tilly, Mea, Grace and Kelsey.

On Thursday, we went to Poltair for the Cornwall Games Hockey Tournament. The team were nervous to begin with as they had never played on a pitch of that size before. Their nervous start was soon overcome with amazing team work and technique. There were some tricky teams to play against, some that even train every week, but they kept their heads up the whole way through (even when it was pouring down with rain). We had some fantastic goals from Freddie, Bobby, Finlay, Owain and Millie. Unfortunately, we didn’t quite get through to the next stage of the Cornwall Games. Player of the tournament go to Finlay.

The scores were as follows:

Carclaze 6 – 0 Mount Charles

Pondhu 3 – 1 Mount Charles

St. Mewan 1- 4 Mount Charles

Bishop Bronescombe 6 – 0 Mount Charles

Charlestown 7 – 0 Mount Charles

Football Year 5/6 A Team vs Mevagissey – Cup Match

Mr Rees took the A team for a cup match at Mevagissy School. After the previous match against Sandy Hill all of the team were determined to put in a better performance. Mount Charles started the game well with shots from Riley and Kieran. Mevagissy grew into the game and Freddie had to make some important saves. With 7 minutes gone a cross from Riley made it to Rodrigo who slotted the ball home. 1-0 to Mount Charles. The lead didn’t last long with Mevagissy quickly equalising. Half time came and the game was evenly balanced at 1-1. The second half started and Mount Charles grew in confidence. Kieran began to pull the strings from midfield, and the defense looking solid. 5 minutes into the second half Kieran picked up the ball on the edge of the box and placed an accurate shot into the top corner. 2-1 to Mount Charles. The Mevagissy heads dropped and great work from George, created a chance for Rodrigo to score his second and win the game for Mount Charles. 3-1 was the final score. We will now play St Stephens or BB in the next round.

Team: Freddie, Finlay, Jude, Kieran, Riley, Rodrigo, George.

Man of the Match: Riley for his tireless work and quick feet.

Netball

On Monday 3rd October, the A team netball squad went to St. Mewan to play their very first tournament. This was also the first time they had played as a team this year.. There were four other schools at the tournament, here’s the results:

Carclaze 8 – Mount Charles 3              Bishop Bronsecombe 1 – Mount Charles 2

St Mewan 5 – Mount Charles 2                        Pondhu 4 – Mount Charles 5

We had some great goals from George, Tineasha, Jude and Jasmine. All the children kept their spirits up and worked really well as a team. Sadly, Mount Charles did not qualify for the next round of the tournament. However, we are really pleased at coming 3rd out of 5 schools. The whole team played extremely well and kept smiling the whole time!!  The A team netball squad consisted of Gracie, George, Jude, Lilyah, Lizzy, Jasmine and Tineasha.

Netball away against Carclaze 4th October – A team – George, Lizzy, Jasmine, Gracie (C), Aleeah, Lilyah and Jude

Carclaze have a great A team and gave us a tough start to the game. We went into the third quarter 5 – 0 down. We put up a good fight in the third quarter, but unfortunately we couldn’t get any goals. In the final quarter, Carclaze managed to score 3 more goals, leaving the final score as 8 – 0 to Carclaze. It was a well deserved win, they gave us a tough game: we just couldn’t quite get it in the net and needed to get in front of their super speedy and tall players. Player of the match goes to Gracie.

B Team – Jess (C), Eva, Dexter, Owain, Katie, Ella, Charlie and Harry

This was a tricky game as the majority of the team had never played before. There was a lot to take on board as they remembered their positions and which way we were going as well as fighting the wind! The first quarter remained goalless. In the second quarter, Ella scored a fantastic goal, but unfortunately Carclaze managed to score two goals. In the third quarter, Jess managed to score a goal, meaning that the score was 2 – 2. We did a great job of moving the ball down the court but unfortunately we couldn’t get any goals in the final quarter. However, Carclaze scored three more goals, leaving the final score as Mount Charles 2 – Carclaze 5. Player of the match goes to Ella.

Football

A team football – The team travelled to Carclaze school without a few first team regulars but excited and eager to represent the school. The game started well with Kevin setting up George for a chance. Eldon make some excellent stops in goal. A few defensive errors allowed Carclaze to grab 3 quick goals. After a quick chat with Mr Rees the team worked hard and continued to press hard for a goal. An excellent scoop by George getting himself through on goal but unable to beat the keeper. Carclaze looked dangerous on the break and scored two further goals. A great effort by the team. Well done to Treeve, Kevin, Eldon, Finlay and Jude for making their A team debuts. We will hope for a better result next time we play.  Team: Eldon, Jude, Finlay, Riley, Kevin, Treeve, George.  Year 3 & 4 Football – This Tuesday, the year 3 and 4 football team had their first match of the season, away to Carclaze. It was an exciting game with chances for both teams. Carclaze got off to the better start and quickly took a 1:0 lead. Mount Charles looked a little nervous and stood back a bit, allowing Carclaze to go on the attack. Stanley made some good saves and Ethan and Freddie started to make some tackles. Cody and Jayden marked the striker well and gradually, Mount Charles began to take control. After a few attempts, Tyler, finally managed to get the ball in the net to bring the scores level. Just before half time, there was some confusion from a Carclaze corner and the ball managed to slip past Stan. 2:1 to Carclaze. At half time, Stan and Freddie swapped positions and Reece came on in defense. We continued to dominate the game, with Jake making some great runs and passing the ball well. Ethan had two long range shots go wide, before Tyler scored again. Although I would have liked a win, the team showed real determination to come back twice and get a draw. Man of the match was Tyler. Well done year 3 and 4.

Team: Stanley, Reece, Cody, Jayden, Freddie, Jake, Ethan, Tyler

Tri Golf

On Friday 30th September our Tri Golf team competed in the Mid Cornwall Tri Golf Festival at Newquay Golf Club. The children had to score points at four different skill stations that involved chipping, putting and swinging a club. They had to score as many points as possible against the clock. When all the points were totalled up we finished fifth overall and although we didn’t qualify for the Cornwall Games Finals the children tried their very best and were good representatives for the school on the day. Well done to the girls and boys who took part.

Team: Lizzy, Caitlyn, Jasmin, Eva, Libby, Dexter, Jamie, Harry, Bobby and Jake.

A super turnout from the Juniors on a beautiful day for running. Every runner who came out to take part can be proud of themselves and it was amazing to see the resilience from some of the children to complete the course and challenge themselves to keep going.  The top 5 runners in each race are listed below with their house colour and the house-points that will be added onto the weekly totals for them.  Thank you to all the runners who gave up their lunchtime to run, the adults who came out to help marshall and record results but also to the Year 6 children that helped to set-up and organise the event with us.
